Jigs for black bass

A bass jig combines a weighted head, hook, skirt and, on many models, a weedguard. Head shape defines where it works: a football jig maintains contact on hard bottom; a flipping or Arky jig comes through cover; a swim jig is designed to move through vegetation and structure. Choose weight for depth, wind and the required fall rate.

The soft-plastic trailer changes bulk, profile and action and must leave enough hook gape exposed. Match hook gauge and weedguard stiffness to the rod, line and cover. A bladed jig adds a vibrating blade and is fished differently; it should not be confused with a metal vertical jig. On the bottom, alternate drags, hops and pauses while keeping contact with the lure.
