Poppers for Largemouth Bass

A popper works on the surface: its concave mouth pushes water and produces a different sound depending on the strength of the jerk. To choose one, compare length, weight, hook size and body volume. A compact model makes casting easier with lighter tackle; a bulkier one moves more water and means checking that the rod can handle its weight.

The retrieve has no single cadence. Alternate jerks and pauses, adjusting the rhythm to the fish's activity and to the clear space between obstacles. Check the buoyancy, the condition of the treble hooks and the line's strength before fishing near weed, wood or rock.
