To choose a Shimano line, first work out whether it's monofilament, fluorocarbon, or braid, and compare diameter, strength, length, and color. The strength you need depends on cover, knots, tackle, and technique; it shouldn't be worked out from fish size alone.

For braid, compare stretch and the ratio between diameter and strength; for monofilament, check elasticity and memory; for fluorocarbon, check density and abrasion resistance according to the rig. No single material handles every situation. Check compatibility with the spool and guides, tie your knots properly, and check the line after it rubs against rock, wood, or weed.
