On a baitcasting reel the spool rotates during the cast, so centrifugal brake or magnetic brake adjustment and spool tension are part of the setup. Check the retrieve hand before buying because right- and left-hand models are not interchangeable. Recommended lure weight, line capacity and spool size must suit the rod and technique.

Gear ratio and line retrieved per handle turn show the actual retrieve speed. A high ratio picks up line quickly for jigs or fast techniques; a moderate ratio gives more control with crankbaits and high-resistance lures. Also check the fighting drag, weight and ergonomics.
