Reels for largemouth bass

The reel must match the rod type: a fixed-spool reel for spinning and a baitcasting reel for casting. In both cases, check line capacity, drag, weight and line retrieve per handle turn. Size ratings are not identical across brands, so compare line diameter and the stated capacity in metres instead of relying only on the model number.

On a spinning reel, the spool lip, rotor and line roller matter. A baitcasting reel also requires checking the casting brake, spool tension and retrieve side. A fast retrieve is not better for every technique: choose it according to how much line must be recovered and the resistance of the lure. The reel should balance with the rod and the rig normally used.
